Community Co-Design project
Our community co-design heritage workshops are well and truly underway, and it’s been a real delight to see ideas inspired by the history of our iconic building and its patrons take shape — from reward badges and sculptures to even wallpaper!
All this creativity and hard work is now helping to shape a permanent art installation here at the Baths. We’re putting a call out to mural artists everywhere to come forward and help us bring all these ideas together to create the final masterpiece.
Here, our creative facilitator Ben tells us a little more about the project and how it’s taking shape so far:
"We are now about half way through our community co-design project here at Bramley Baths.
A growing group of local bramleyites have been meeting on the 1st and 3rd T
uesday of every
month to lift the lid on the cultural inner workings of this grand old building and the many
wondrous folk who have flowed around its corridors through the years.
The main aim of this creative cohort has been to make and amass, designs, motifs, colour
palettes and overarching themes that can be used by a mural artist and stained glass
window artist to make a pair of permanent artworks to live in the Baths.
So far the group has sketched the architecture of the baths from several angles, constructed
imaginative sculptures out of found objects from around the building, carved and designed
stamps to print our own William Morris wallpaper and delivered walking tours of the Baths as
if it were the set of an imaginary sitcom.
From these sessions the collective have been able to establish strong themes of nature,
family, aspiration and civic pride. Unearthed tons of heart warming hilarious and touching
stories. They have designed several key elements and developed two compositional motifs
for the final artwork.
We have several sessions remaining and we would be delighted to welcome any new
participants. Our next session which is being led by one of the cohort is a Gelli printing
workshop, inspired by the windows of the building and the theme of future and hope.
Upcoming sessions may include cyanotype and a sound art workshop, using hydrophones to
record in the pool.
